Autumn Animal Encounters

With the release of the fantastic family flick NIM’S ISLAND this season is set to be animal hopping mad. All children (and that is us big kids too!) deserve the chance to befriend the natural world, and this shouldn’t be limited to the powers of our imagination. Tiger Airways is flying kids of all ages and their families to meet friends like Nim’s plus many more amazing creatures. Fly to Tasmania, Adelaide or Perth where you can meet creatures great and small in a variety of habitats- and bring the world of dreams to life!

Tasmania

Tasmania has more than 5,400 kilometres of coastline to explore by foot, boat or road and meet Tasmania’s resident wildlife as you go.

In the winter months, you may be lucky to spot pods of right and humpback whales travelling to and from Antarctic waters. Fur seal breeding colonies can be found and little penguins nest along the coast. Under water find delicate sea dragons drifting near forests of giant kelp. And while Tasmania’s marine animals are among its most impressive wildlife, of the many types of birds that make their home in Tasmania, 12 are species found n owhere else in the world.

With so many native animals, you will be surprised at how accessible Tasmania’s wildlife is.

Rottnest Island

Just 19 km off the coast of beautiful Freemantle WA, Rottnest Island is a haven for both marine and land dwelling animals.

Meet your new furry friend- the adorable Quokka! The Quokka is a small marsupial, which has the appearance of a pint-sized kangaroo. Look out for them at night when they are most active or under dense shrubs during the day. Quokkas give birth in late summer, so August visitors may get to see babies venturing out of mother’s pouch for the first time!

For those brave enough to suit up and dive, you’ll meet an under water world of sea creatures. There is exotic tropical fish, sea lions, and marine marvels such as the manta ray. The loggerhead turtle is always a friendly favourite, as are those incredible mosaic starfish.

Kangaroo Island

This picturesque island just a few hours from Adelaide Airport is the home to some of Australia’s most treasured creatures, such as kangaroos, wallabies, possums, frogs, bandicoots, koalas, platypus, sea-lions and fur-seals… the list goes on. This is your chance to see an abundance of wildlife in its natural habitat and make some new friends.

Fortunate autumn visitors may catch the little penguins beginning to nest and those visiting in the winter season will see the ospreys show off their spectacular courtship flights. This is also the time of year wallabies emerge from mother’s pouch.
